A PhD SOP or research statement is read by faculty evaluating whether you can genuinely contribute to and complete independent research in their specific area — not administrators assessing general academic promise. This means demonstrating real research methodology fluency, articulating a specific gap or question in the literature, and showing credible alignment with a named potential supervisor's actual current work.
The most common weakness is a research statement that reads as generally interested in a broad field ("I am passionate about neuroscience") without engaging with any specific unresolved question or naming a supervisor whose work is genuinely relevant.
