Understanding the service

What editing actually fixes — and what it can't

Most SOP drafts aren't badly written in the grammatical sense — they're structurally weak. A strong opening buried in paragraph three, generic phrases doing the work specific evidence should be doing, or a word count wildly over an embassy's limit. Editing addresses exactly this: structure, specificity, tone and compliance — while keeping the content and voice yours.

What editing can't do is invent content that isn't there. If your draft is missing a genuine reason for choosing your course, or never explains a study gap, editing will surface that gap clearly rather than paper over it — and we'll tell you honestly if what you need is closer to a full rewrite than a polish.

How we decide: edit or rewrite? If the raw material — your real reasons, evidence and story — is mostly there, editing is the faster, cheaper option. If the core content itself is missing or generic throughout, we'll say so upfront rather than charge you for an edit that won't fix the actual problem.

What our editors check, every time

Does the opening earn attention, or does it read like every other SOP?
Is every claim backed by a specific example, not an adjective?
Does the word count match the target university or embassy's limit?
Is the tone consistent — not swinging between casual and overly formal?
Are there any grammar, spelling or formatting errors left uncorrected?
Choose your editing depth

Three levels, depending on what your draft needs

Not sure which one fits? Send us your draft — we'll recommend the right level before you pay for more than you need.

Proofreading

For drafts that are already well-structured and just need a final, careful pass before submission.

  • Grammar, spelling and punctuation corrections
  • Word count and format compliance check
  • Consistency check on tenses and tone
Best for: a draft you're mostly happy with, needing a final quality check before you submit.

Line Editing

For drafts with a decent structure but weak, generic or repetitive language throughout.

  • Everything in Proofreading
  • Rewriting generic phrases into specific, evidenced statements
  • Sharpening the opening and closing paragraphs
Best for: a draft where the content is right but the writing feels flat, clichéd or repetitive.

Structural Rewrite

For drafts with good raw material — your experiences and reasoning — but a structure that buries the strongest points.

  • Everything in Line Editing
  • Reordering paragraphs to lead with your strongest material
  • Identifying and flagging any missing content (e.g. an unaddressed gap)
Best for: a draft where the ideas are good but the order and emphasis aren't working yet.

Common questions

Editing & proofreading questions, answered

How do I know if I need editing or a full rewrite?

Send us your current draft — it's a free assessment. If your reasoning and evidence are mostly there but the writing or structure isn't landing, editing is the right, faster option. If the core content is missing or too generic throughout, we'll tell you honestly that a full rewrite will serve you better.

Will editing keep my own voice?

Yes — that's the entire point of editing versus a rewrite. We sharpen, restructure and correct, but the finished draft should still sound like you, since you may be asked about it at interview or in person.

Can you edit a document I wrote with AI assistance?

Yes. We often see drafts that started with AI tools and read generically as a result — our editors specifically target that kind of flat, templated phrasing and replace it with specific, personal evidence.

Do you edit documents other than SOPs?

Yes — personal statements, visa statements, LORs, motivation letters and GS statements can all be edited using the same three-level system.

What format will I receive my edited draft in?

You'll receive a tracked-changes version showing exactly what was altered, plus a clean final version ready to submit.
